The French Basque Country is a truly beautiful area. It is made up of three small provinces (Lapurdi, Nafarroa Beherea and Zuberoa) and has all the charm of an area that has remained almost unchanged over time. Indeed, its attractive towns and cities are very beautiful thanks to the fact that the design of their houses maintains the same aesthetic pattern and its unspoilt green landscape, with soft and rounded green mountains that offer countless hiking routes which are both easy and pleasant to walk.
The interior is predominantly rural and is less populated than the coast. The beautiful, scattered villages dot with white the green valleys and mountains of the countryside. One of its most important towns is Saint Jean Pied de Port, the main starting point for the most popular pilgrimage to Santiago: the French Way. However, the coast has more important towns that have been, and still are, famous tourist centres such as Biarritz, Anglet, Saint Jean de Luz or Hendaye. The main city of the French Basque Country is Bayone.
Our trip begins in San Sebastián. Once the whole group has gathered, we go to the beautiful village of Saint Martin d´Arrossa which, due to its location in the heart of the French Basque Country, is where we stay for the whole trip. The following days we walk along the best routes in the surroundings, getting to know different areas of this beautiful land. In the middle of the week, we take a day off to visit the most interesting towns, such as Saint Jean Pied de Port, a beautiful city where the famous French Way of St. James starts, and Biarritz, one of the most important seaside resorts in France that has attracted tourists from all over the world since the 19th century. In the second half of the week we complete two more hiking routes, the second one being shorter to have time to return to San Sebastián in the afternoon, where we stay for the last night. To mark the end of our trip, there can be nothing better than a guided tour of this lovely city, one of the most beautiful in Europe, and a pintxos tour for dinner, accompanied by a local guide.
In short, it is a trip in a perfect place to enjoy a fantastic hiking holiday.

Living in the Basque Country has allowed us to select in person the ideal accommodation for this trip: the Eskualduna hotel in Saint Martin d´Arrossa. It is a 2-star family hotel that is very well located in the center of our area of activity and offers everything you need to ensure a pleasant stay. The rooms have en-suite bathrooms. They are simple, but very comfortable, and are accessible by lift. There is a bar with large terraces. The restaurant offers excellent regional cuisine and is very famous and valued throughout the area. In addition, the hotel has a heated swimming pool that can be used all year round, as well as a sauna, spa and a small gymnasium. You can even order a relaxing massage. The fact that it is a family hotel makes the treatment given by the owners very friendly and close, making the stay very pleasant. In short, a perfect place for a fantastic hiking week in this area.

Do I have to make any reservation or do anything myself?
The only thing you have to look after is your round trip to and from San Sebastian (remember that we can advise and help you with the arrangements). Everything else is organised so you don't have to worry about anything, we look after everything. You just have to worry about coming here and enjoying your trip to the full.
How can I get to the area?
First, you have to arrive to the city of San Sebastian, in the north of Spain. Nowadays this is very easy because this area has very good communications by land, sea and air. There are several options to fly to our different airports and our cities are connected by modern motorways. You also have the option of coming by bus, train and even by boat if you come from Great Britain. For more information, see the "How to get here" section of the "Information" tab.
Once in San Sebastian, we pick you up and take you to the French Basque Country where this trip takes place. At the end of the trip, we bring you back to San Sebastian so that you can return home or continue on your trip from here.
What currency and language is used in the area?
As in the other countries of the European Union, the currency used is the euro. With regard to languages, French is widely spoken in this area. However, as part of the Basque Country, another language is also spoken: Basque, one of the oldest and most mysterious languages in the world. While you are here, you will often hear and see Basque and we will tell you some curious facts about this ancient language.
English is not generally used in these areas and, when it is, the level may be basic. In any case, a bilingual guide will be with you at all times, so you won't have any problems in understanding the locals.
Is it a safe area?
Yes, fortunately this area is very safe and visitors do not usually have any problems on their trip.
However, we recommend taking the usual common sense precautions against theft.
Can I book a single person trip?
Yes, as long as there are other people on that same trip. Walking North Spain cannot offer guided trips for a single person. There will be an individual supplement for single person reservations.
What is the best time of year to make this trip?
This trip can be made at any time of the year although the best dates are probably from May to October
What are the routes like? Are they very long or difficult?
This area offers many different routes of different lengths and levels of effort. In general, the selected routes for this trip are between 10 and 16 kilometres, with a height gain of between 550 and 900 metres, so that everybody accustomed to hill-walking and is reasonably fit can hike our routes without difficulty. Walking North Spain is also able to choose those routes that best suit the preferences and characteristics of the group.
Will it be possible to shorten some routes?
The group will be led by a single guide if there are 8 or fewer clients. With just one guide the group cannot be divided and everyone will have to follow the same itinerary. There will be 2 guides leading if there are 9 or more clients in the group making it possible to shorten the routes for part of the group.
I have some dietary restrictions, is it possible to take this into account?
Of course, although one of the main attractions of this area is its gastronomy, every year we welcome people who have dietary restrictions. In these cases, we inform all the accommodations and restaurants we visit so that this is taken into account.
