The Basque Country offers a large number of hiking routes that visit or go to places of great natural, historical or cultural interest. Indeed, this area of Europe has many surprising corners and interesting places to visit, not only because of its exuberant nature and the fact that it has been a region inhabited by different peoples since prehistoric times, but also because many tribes used this side of the Pyrenees to cross into the Iberian Peninsula.
Our hiking company is located in the beautiful city of San Sebastián. The fact that we were born here and have lived all our lives in the Basque Country gives us an in-depth knowledge of its most beautiful places and secret corners. Now, thanks to this travel of Walking North Spain, you too will be able to know and visit some of these magical places and to know them as if you were a local inhabitant.
The 6 hiking routes of this trip take place in curious and spectacular places that are usually only familiar to and visited by the inhabitants of the area: mountains, old roads, river springs, waterfalls, viewpoints, caves, prehistoric monuments, abandoned villages, ruined fortresses, battlefields, hermitages, etc. We will even visit parts of three different Ways to Santiago...... this trip is a surprise at every step!
Two different places have been selected to stay overnight and act as starting points for the excursions. In this way, a wider knowledge of this area is acquired and the journeys to the places of interest are shorter and quicker. You will stay in two fantastic rural hotels that, besides offering everything necessary for a comfortable and pleasant stay, have enormous charm. In addition, both have a great cuisine renowned throughout this region. In this way, we will combine the satisfaction of a fantastic hiking day together with the pleasure of savoring the world famous Basque gastronomy.
This is the summary of the programme:
Day 1: Arrival to San Sebastián and transfer to the first rural hotel
Days 2 and 3: Two first secrets routes
Day 4: Third secret route and transfer to the second rural hotel
Days 5 to 7: Three more secret routes
Day 8: Departure day
The order of this programme could be changed for different reasons, such as the availability of accommodation or weather forecasts. Any change would be communicated to customers in advance.
There are many and very good rural accommodations in these areas but, in our opinion, the best options are some small hotels that offer the highest level of quality and service to their clients. These hotels are located in beautiful villages or in the middle of nature, always in quiet surroundings, which makes the stay very pleasant and guarantees a good rest. They are small hotels with few rooms so the attention is focused on very few clients. Their exterior architecture is very beautiful as is their interior decoration, which makes them very nice and welcoming. Many of them have their own restaurant and offer delicious cuisine that is a good example of the famous and renowned Basque gastronomy.
For this trip we have chosen two of these hotels. Since we live and work in this area, we have chosen these accommodations in person. We have known them for a long time and we have seen first-hand how they are and how they work. For this reason, we can guarantee that these are accommodations offer high levels of quality and service and that they are the ideal places to enjoy and rest on this trip.

How can I get to the area?
Today, the Basque Country is a highly developed area that has very good communications by land, sea and air making it easy to get to San Sebastian. There are several options to fly to our different airports and our cities are connected by modern motorways. You also have the option of coming by bus, train and even by boat if you come from Great Britain. For more information, see the "How to get here" section of the "Information" tab.
What currency and language is used in the area?
As in the other countries of the European Union, the currency used is the euro. With regard to languages, this is one of the many attractions of this region because, apart from Spanish, one of the oldest and most mysterious languages in the world is spoken in the Basque Country: Basque. While you are here, you will often hear and see Basque and we will tell you some curious facts about this ancient language. With regard to English, it is not generally used in these areas and, when it is, the level may be basic. In any case, a bilingual guide will be with you at all times, so you won't have any problem in understanding the locals.
Is it a safe area?
Yes, fortunately this area is very safe and visitors do not usually have any problems on their trip.
However, we recommend taking the usual common sense precautions against theft.
Can I book a single person trip?
Yes, as long as there are other people on that same trip. Walking North Spain cannot offer guided trips for a single person. There will be an individual supplement for single reservations.
What is the best time of year to make this trip?
This trip can be made at any time of the year although the best dates are probably from May to October
What are the routes like? Are they very long or difficult?
In general, the selected routes for this trip are between 13 and 17 kilometres, with a height gain of between 475 and 950 metres, so that everybody accustomed to hill-walking and is reasonable fit can hike our routes without any difficulty.
Will it be possible to shorten some routes?
The group will be led by a single guide if there are 8 or fewer clients. With just one guide the group cannot be divided and everyone will have to follow the same itinerary. There will be 2 guides leading if there are 9 or more clients in the group making it possible to shorten the routes for part of the group.
I have some dietary restrictions, is it possible to take this into account?
Of course, although one of the main attractions of this area is its gastronomy, every year we welcome people who have dietary restrictions. In these cases, we inform all the accommodations and restaurants we visit so that this is taken into account.
